Love Ghost – “Chasin’ Money and Bitches”

The 1970’s created a perfect musical bridge from the rebelliousness of the 1960s and the happy songs that are characteristic of the 1980’s. Now take a blend of the aesthetics from those decades, and mix it in with the current urban hedonistic culture of “Chasin’ Money and Bitches”. Add in large portions of gelastic irony, crunchy electric guitars, a slow hazy hand-clapping beat and a rock roll singer with bicolored hair. You’ve just tuned into the latest single and video by L.A. based rock band Love Ghost.

For those still not in the now, the band consists of Finnegan Bell (guitar and lead vocals), Ryan Stevens (bass and background vocals), Samson Young (drums and background vocals), Daniel Alcala (guitar) and Cory Batchler (keyboards). They are currently working on a new album with legendary producer Danny Saber (The Rolling Stones, U2, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, etc.).

“‘Chasin’ Money & Bitches’ is supposed to be a fun song,” explained front-man Finnegan Bell. “There’s a lot to be upset and distraught by right now. Coronavirus, politics, world hunger, mental illness, etc. This song is tongue-in-cheek, and I hope it provides relief and healing to anyone that’s suffering right now.”

The current Covid-19 lock-down will no doubt put the brakes on the band’s escalating momentum, arresting all tour plans and established dates, but it certainly won’t break their spirit, as can be witnessed by this amusing and entertaining song.

“Chasin’ Money & Bitches” is a far cry from the usual dark and haunting material Love Ghost have been putting out in recent releases, and shows a complete new side to the band. It is another excellent song, with some pertinent, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and an awesome chorus. Infectious riffs and vivacious double entendres with a needed dose of rock crunch and melodic sensibilities drives this song into the captivating category.

Expounding upon this foundation, the piece is also a display of each musician at the peak of their talents, in particular the guitar trade-offs and the drumming, as well as the vocals of Finnegan Bell, submitting another outstanding performance.

This track never really lets up. It has its own original mix of styles and sound. Moreover, just by changing the song title, “Chasin’ Money & Bitches” would be musically and lyrically relevant in any era from the 60’s onward.

Love Ghost admirably varies, expands, and solidifies their sound, perhaps spurred on by their alliance with producer Danny Saber. Love Ghost spares no creative expense to hammer down this track and visual, with every spirited fill and Gucci trick they can. “Chasin’ Money & Bitches” will catch many Love Ghost listeners by surprise.
