Hunter Morris – “Addiction”

Hunter Morris is a 19 year old singer-songwriter from New Bern, North Carolina. He blends a genre mix of Pop, Folk, Electronic and Alternative into his music. Hunter has released his 4 track EP “Small Town Vibes”. Finding a place in the crossover between commercial radio and quality alt-folk is a hard thing to do. Filled to the brim with easy listening songs, this recording successfully accomplishes this difficult feat. The uplifting and hand-clapping rhythm of “Addiction” starts the ball rolling, it’s an enlightening dose of indie-pop that could easily be on any mainstream radio playlist; Hunter’s vocals soar and emote as he moves through its high and low register.

The EP’s second track “Escape” launches the folk elements with the masterful strumming and change of rhythm, before switching to a luscious indie-rock scenario. This is another track worthy of smashing out some airplay on indie radio stations.

Again, this is due to Hunter’s resonating voice and a knack for an uplifting melody. The same can be said for the third track “Falling For You”. It’s catchy and Hunter’s punchy vocal is a memorable resonation, and its accompanying, rollicking music literally hangs on every word.

“Sleepless Nights” presents a dynamic atmosphere consisting of subtle to intense elements of storytelling. The clean driving acoustic guitars providing a lush background to the layered vocals. The EP truly embraces Hunter Morris’ take on the alternative rock/indie folk scene, his knack for storytelling is evident in each track.

“Small Town Vibes” is an enjoyable listen whether you’ve heard of Hunter Morris or not, or if you simply enjoy pumping some indie/folk through your speakers. It’s evident he’s capable of offering so much more in years to come.

If you’re a sucker for the singer-songwriter type, this EP will pleasantly charm you. It is unexpectedly full of intricately crafted phrases and hooks. Each song weaves a delicate web of a story, as he bares his soul with the backdrop of a candid crossover soundscape.

Around the blissful guitars and tentative vocals, you’ll suddenly realize just how captivating Hunter Morris’ melodies and vocal arrangements can be. Though only nineteen, the well-thought out lyrics, impeccable production and strong backbone of each song show that “Small Town Vibes” isn’t an EP that Hunter has taken lightly.

His outlet of expression shows off a focused, yet caring nature, sometimes hidden by the upbeat, infectious rhythms. It’s also refreshing to hear so much emotion invested in an understated way. This makes the listening experience smooth and deliciously appealing.

Hunter Morris is certainly set to make a wave in the alt-folk and indie-rock music world, and it will be exciting to see what else he has in store. Beautiful, emotive, richly textured with solid lyrical depth, “Small Town Vibes” exceeded my high expectations.
